Poly Electronics LLC, a Hi-Tech designer, manufacturer, and nationwide distributor of PCB circuit boards and custom electronic solutions, has edged closer to its goal of delivering zero-defect products to their customers with the addition of three AI-powered 3D AOI inspection machines by KOH YOUNG to all manufacturing lines.
Using matched grant from the Indiana Economic Development Corporation (IEDC) to promote Indiana manufacturing growth, this emerging technology verifies the placement of components and post-reflow solder of each circuit board to ensure quality that conforms and exceeds global IPC-610 standards.
“With this new equipment on both our SMT and THT lines, we can meet our production target and enhance our yield, moving us closer to a continuous zero-defect process & product for our customer,” says Paul Eastwood, Director of Manufacturing at Poly Electronics. “Advancements in technology are now merging to not only generate 3D AOI profilimetric data based on 3D scanning technology, but AI is now assisting in interpreting that data so we can make changes and adjustments on the fly to prevent issues down the line.”
The equipment uses deep learning and advanced optical light array scanning technology to measure accurate profilometric component shapes, flag minute errors in solder fillets and component placement, and review possible post-reflow issues. Three Machines: a KY8030 Solder Paste Inspection, a Zenith Alpha for Post Reflow inspection for the SMT line, & a Zenith UHS for THT component and solder fillet inspection.
With the user-friendly and engaging visual software and touch screen interface, several employees are now undergoing training to operate this equipment, leading to advancement and higher learning.
“The intent of the Manufacturing Readiness Grant from the IEDC was intended to help hoosier manufacturers prepare for the industries of tomorrow.” Says Poly Electronics President, Matt Kain. “With this investment, we are not only bolstering Northern Indiana’s reputation as a destination for Technology jobs, but we are making the investment that will grow the company which we hope will create jobs in the area for many years to come.”
34 grant recipients located across 22 Indiana counties, range in specialties including; aerospace and defense, automotive, custom electronics and medical devices. Indiana Economic Development Corporation in partnership with Conexus Indiana awarded these funds on a 1:1 investment match in 2021 supporting technology-based capital investment projected to be more than $68.6 million.
